THE BORROWERS

PLOT: 


Pod and Homily Clock and their 13-year-old daughter Arietty are "Borrowers"-little people, only 20cm. tall. They live under the floor and "borrow" things from the humans in the big house above them. The entrance t otheir home is undfer a grandfather clock -so they are called the "Clock" family. Life is comfortable, but a little boring...especially for Arietty. She wants to go into the big garden and explore. She wants to play with other children. 
Then a human boy comes to live upstairs. It's dangerous for a borrower to meet a human...but lonely Arietty wants a friend. Is it possible?


PRE-READING ACTIVITIES:

  • Mention the different categories of stories (or films) you know.
  • Look at the front cover of the reader and  guess what type of story it is: fact / fiction, adventure, etc. Describe what you can see. 
  • Describe the characters and guess who they are:
  • Choose a character,  and write some  adjectives to describe the character’s personality. You can find a list HERE and HERE.
  • Find a picture in the book of:
    •  a. a family having afternoon tea 
    •  b. an enormous cat ;
    • c. a frightened girl alone in a garden  
  • Read the second paragraph on page 8. List three things you learn about the Borrowers. 
  • Look at the top picture on page 10. 
    • Why are the people sad? 
    • Why do you think the man is climbing down the curtain on page 11? 
  • Read the text above the picture on page 15. Why do you think Pod is telling Arietty this story? 
  • Look at the pictures on page 16. Describe how the little girl feels in each picture. 
  • Read the last two paragraphs on page 18. What do Pod and Arietty want to get? 
  • Read the first 8 lines on page 22 and look at the picture. Why is Arietty frightened?

TITLE: A Sense of Danger.

PLOT: TJody and Jonathan Kelly, 16, come to Spain because of their father's new job. Jonathan is telepathic and he has got a bad feeling about the change. At the airport, the tween meet Rafa and his sister, Blanca, and they become friends. Two suspicious men have revolvers on the plane. Jonathan has a sense of danger and it gets stronger in their new home. then mr. Kelly is falsely accused of sabotage. The twins must help him prove his innocence, but how?.

TITLE: A Secret Fear.

PLOT: The book tells the story of two boys (Joey and Kevin). One day of summer they’re making a tent in Joey’s garden. The boys go into the tent, it’sdark in the tent and Kevin tells ghost stories. But Joey has a secret fear. He’s frightened of the dark.

The next day Joey reads the e-mail from his friend Jamie. Jamie is celebrating a party on Saturday night and they are telling ghost stories. Joey must make an excuse to Jamie.

After school Joey discovers that his friend, Kevin, has got a secret fear, too.

Kevin is frightened of high places.

The boys decide to go in the lift but the lift is broken, the doors closed and the light off. Kevin and Joey are talking and to forget the fear and they surpass the fear.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (by R. Louis Stevenson)


What can a person do when he's pulled between the good and the bad inside him? Dr. Jekyll, a scientist, uses chemistry to divide himself into two different people, the good Dr. Jekyll and the evil Mr. Hyde. The conflict between the two sides of his personality becomes more abd more violent. Which side will win?

READING 2nd TERM

2º ESO
"British Myths and Legends" by Julie Hart, Ed. Burlington Books


This book contains three stories:


- "The Pot of Gold". This story comes from Ireland. Here you can read how a shrewd elf fools Shaun O'Brian, a young, lazy man.
You must hand in the "after reading activities"  on January 30th


- "The Two Boxes". This story comes from Wales. The main characters are two sisters. One of them is nice and good but the other one is selfish and greedy.
You must hand in the "after reading activities"  on February 20th

- "George and the Dragon". St. George, the famous hero and Saint patron of England, fights an evil dragon and rescues the beautiful princess Claire.
You must hand in the "after reading activities"  on March 12th

They are a selection of myths and legends from the British Isles. They are full of magic and fantasy. Where does the clever leprechaun, a little elf-like man, hide his pot of gold? What magical things happpen to Bella and her lazy sister? Can George fight a terrible dragon and save the beautiful princess? Find out the answers and see how good always triumphs over evil in the end.

Thirteen-year-old Arietty Clock is only 20 cm tall. She and her family live under the floor of a house, where they borrow things from the humans who live above them. That's why they're called "Borrowers". Arietty is lonely, until one day she ventures into the garden and meets a human boy. The two become friends and that is when the trouble begins.
